JOHN DRINKWATER ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR LOWELL CITY COUNCIL
Lowell parent and workers’ rights advocate pulls papers as he gears up for campaign
LOWELL, MA -- John Drinkwater announced today that he will run for Lowell City Council in this fall’s municipal election. Drinkwater looks to couple his dedication as a parent of young children in the Lowell Public Schools with his history of advocacy on behalf of working families as he lays out his vision for the city during the campaign.
Having spent the past thirteen years working for the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, including the last five as Legislative Director, Drinkwater understands the daily struggles of working people, as well as the impact of local, state, and federal government on the lives of working families -- particularly in the areas of economic development and education.
“There is no greater responsibility for an elected official than to ensure a quality public education for every child,” Drinkwater said. He added, “As someone who has a very big stake in that area for years to come, I feel I can bring a practical and passionate approach to discussions around our schools that will echo the feelings of many other parents.”
“Our commitment to our students and young people in our community shouldn’t end when they graduate high school,” Drinkwater added. “I also want to prioritize career opportunities and job development for young adults in the city, particularly when we attract significant new employers or construction projects. As a City Councillor I will focus on the residual impacts of our economic development opportunities.”
Drinkwater joins this race on the heels of an impressive State Senate run in 2018, where he finished second in a five-way Democratic Primary featuring three former-Mayors of Lowell. He looks forward to engaging with Lowell residents again and discussing the issues that matter most to them while knocking on doors around the city.
Drinkwater graduated from UMass Lowell with a Bachelors in Political Science and a Masters in Economic and Social Development. John lives in Lowell with his wife, Julie, and his three children, Adeline (7), Sean (5), and Reilly (2). At UMass Lowell, he and Julie were All-American athletes in Track and Field where they both served as captains to their respective teams.
